2018 Volunteers of the Year

"Our 2018 Volunteers of the Year—Judy Mayo and Kathy Whitfield. Judy and Kathy serve in many roles for Meals on Wheels. Together, they drive Route F, which covers The Groves and the Cooper Estates area, on Tuesdays and have become amazing friends in the process. Kathy and Judy met by chance, when Kathy’s delivery partner retired and Judy was hoping to begin her journey with East Cooper Meals on Wheels. The two quickly became very good friends. When I met them, in October of 2015, their husbands were very involved as well. You could always depend on the four of them to deliver meals, work at various fundraising events, serve as amazing Ambassadors for our organization, befriend and visit our recipients on days when they weren’t volunteering, serve as substitute drivers, offer extra help during the holidays, and so much more. Though Judy’s husband passed away in January of 2018, we still fondly refer to them as “the four muskateers”: Judy, Frank, Kathy, and Jerry. While Kathy and Judy LOVE their recipients, they will tell you that they KNOW the love is reciprocated, because they feel it every time they arrive at someone’s door!" -- Kelley Chapman, East Cooper Meals on Wheels Volunteer Manager.

2018 Walter Notten Award for Superior Volunteer Service Award

The Bellaciccos, Volunteers of the Year 2018

The 2018 Walter Notten Award for Superior Volunteer Service Award was bestowed upon Lori and Rob Bellacicco and their dog, Bella. Rob and Lori drive on Fridays — rain, snow or shine. They helped us immensely after the 2018 snowstorm when the roads were still covered in ice. Rob and Lori are so closely connected to the recipients on their route and take time to chat with them throughout the week — especially Carrie Mae Brown. They assist Carrie and others with tasks like replacing screen doors, repairing porches, moving furniture and any other tasks our recipients may find daunting.

Lori and Rob carry their dog, Bella, with them on the route and the recipients love Bella. Carrie Mae holds Bella every time she receives a visit from the Bellaccicos. This couple inspires us with their selflessness and dedication to not only East Cooper Meals on Wheels, but many other facets their community, wherever there may be a need. This couple, alone or together, will jump in at a moment’s notice to help any person or animal. They always have an ear, a shoulder and a big heart for everyone they meet.
