Feeding Friends

Feeding Friends: Kathy’s Story

A decade ago, a call came in about Kathy, a young woman from Canada recovering alone in a local hotel after major surgery at MUSC. With no way to shop or cook, she was stuck. East Cooper Meals on Wheels stepped in that same day, and a new program was born.

We realized that for patients like Kathy, nutrition is medicine. Whether someone is visiting Charleston for a transplant or a local neighbor is heading home after surgery, the first few weeks of recovery are critical. Proper meals don’t just help people heal faster; they prevent the setbacks that lead right back to a hospital bed.

From One Patient to 14,000 Meals

What started with one phone call has grown into our Feeding Friends program. After 18 months of care, Kathy returned to Toronto healthy and still keeps in touch with her “Meals on Wheels family” today.

By partnering with the local healthcare community, we’ve ensured that recovery doesn’t have to be a struggle. We recently hit a massive milestone: delivering our 14,000th patient meal this past year alone!

If you’re healing from surgery, an injury, or a health setback that makes the kitchen feel out of reach, let us take the lead on lunch. We provide healthy, ready-to-eat meals at no cost, so you can focus entirely on getting better.
