Please extend a round of applause for Ann and Harry Douty! What an outstanding couple these best friends make as they show us how teamwork makes the dream work. Harry and Ann have been a part of this organization for decades. In addition to delivering meals on Route A and Route 9, they frequently help us cover routes when we need substitute drivers. Ann and Harry genuinely care about the volunteers, staff, and every recipient they serve. All who encounter them walk away feeling appreciated and seen.
Ann shared with me: “I started volunteering in 1998 when I retired from teaching. Meals on Wheels was at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian, then St. Andrew’s, and then Christ Church, so it has been at least 26 years! I enjoyed getting to know the people on my route. When you know them, you notice things that others might not see. According to a family I have come to know, one lady could have died if I had not noticed changes in her. It is a blessing to get to know the recipients and that you are not only helping them stay in their homes as long as it is safe for them, but providing caring contact with a person daily.”
From Harry: “Before I started helping Ann, I was a volunteer of 20+ years at Roper Hospital installing LifeLine. When that program was discontinued, it felt like a natural transition to help Meals on Wheels. Ultimately at both, I have enjoyed meeting new people and assisting those who need it. Being so blessed, I wanted to continue giving back to the community. What a great organization to be a part of!”
Ann and Harry, you mean the world to us. We are the lucky ones to be able to call you family. Thank you for being YOU!
